Las Vegas Citizenship Test

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) administers citizenship tests for naturalization. If you want to apply for citizenship in Las Vegas, you need to pass a citizenship test that examines your English language ability and also tests your U.S. government and history knowledge. Las Vegas immigration law firm Fountas & Associates can advise you about the citizenship test and other requirements.

English language skills

The Las Vegas citizenship test is divided into three sections that test English language skills:

  • Reading.  Out of three sentences in English, you must successfully read one sentence in a way that shows you understood the sentence.
  • Writing.  Out of three sentences in English, you must successfully write one sentence so that someone else reading it can understand it.
  • Speech.  The USCIS officer conducts an interview, asking you questions about your Form N-400 Application for Naturalization. While listening to your answers, the officer evaluates your ability to speak English.
  • Exceptions.  You are exempt from the language skill portion of the test if you are at least 55 years old and a permanent resident for at least 15 years, or at least 50 years old and a permanent resident for at least 20 years. You may also take the civics test in your native language.

Civics test

The civics portion of the citizenship test has been made more difficult within the last few years by incorporating specific types of questions that require more knowledge of U.S. history and government. The USCIS officer gives the test orally and asks you ten questions. You must answer six questions correctly to pass the test.

For citizenship test study tools to improve English language skills and civics knowledge (which includes audio study sections, flash cards, and a list of test questions) see the USCIS website

Waivers

You may qualify for an N-648 waiver of the citizenship test if a medical disability impairs your ability to learn and take the test. Fountas & Associates can review the facts of your case to help determine whether you would qualify for such a waiver. Also, if you are a permanent resident living in the United States for 20 years and 65 years or older, you do not need to study as many questions for the civics test.

Appointments and re-examination for the Las Vegas citizenship test

You receive a notice in the mail for the appointment date of the test that also informs you where to take the test. You have two opportunities to pass the test. If you fail to pass the first test, you receive another appointment to take the test in 60-90 days. The re-examination only covers the part failed during the first test.
